Virtual Library Card

The library’s “Virtual Library Card” helps VDOT employees access library collections and services. We created the VLC two years ago by connecting the library’s EOS Library automation system (which has patron user names and passwords) to a hosted authentication service called EZProxy. The bar graph below (left) shows cardholder growth during the past five quarters. Due to unusually high levels of onboarding at VDOT this quarter, the total number of Virtual Library Card holders increased by a record 155 names this quarter. The pie chart (right) shows VLC growth this quarter, with a breakout showing the three circumstances under which new accounts are created:

Self-Registration (24): Some VDOT employees register themselves online. Library staff verify their identity, activate their accounts, and send a welcome message and support documentation.

Onboarding (131): The library gets new data from Human Resources to create new accounts and sends a welcome message and support documentation to all new VDOT employees with e-mail addresses. 

Other New Accounts (0): These cards are created for walk-in patrons or patrons who submittted and e-mail or online request. 

Removed (27): This number of accounts were removed this quarter due to employee separations. 

Gil Kenner assisted with onboarding activities this quarter and helped train new staffer Rebecca Ernest, who will be taking over those responsibilities next quarter.
