This video demonstrates how VDOT employees can "check out" hard-copy materials remotely. And YES we will ship for free!
As things slowly get back to normal and VDOT employees contemplate the agency's "plan for reconstitution" (we are officially at Stage 3, Part 2...clear as mud, right?) some of us are starting to feel a bit "one foot in, one foot out" when it comes to work. Every day we're asking questions like: Is today an "office" day or a "work from home" day? What resources do I need to complete my projects...and where are they? Can I figure out what books the VDOT Research Library has, and if the library has something I need, how in the world am I supposed to get to it if the place is closed?
Well if you're in need of resources you don't have to wonder what's available or how you'll get it...because every one of our Collections and every one of our Services is accessible to VDOT employees "remotely" via computer. That includes more than 60,000 volumes of hard-copy books and all of our electronic resources and subscription databases, which have literally millions of: articles, eBooks, audio books, book summaries, videos and standards.
But back to the "hard-copy" stuff... yeah we've got the books you need from AASHTO, ITE and ASCE among other core transportation publishers. Yeah, we've got the P.E. Exam study materials. Yeah, we've even got thousands of archival VDOT publications and transportation resources held by no other library in the country.
How can you see what we've got? How can you get the items you need short of an "in person" visit, which, frankly is still off the table right now? It's as simple as 1-2-3!
1: Search the Library Catalog to discover 60,000+ books, reports and other hard-copy materials. This Quick-Start Guide shows you how the catalog works.
2: When you find something you want, use your Virtual Library Card to check it out "remotely" from any Internet connected device (a VDOT device, a personal device, on VPN, off VPN...it does not matter). This New Video shows you how remote checkout works.
3: The rest is on us. We will will pull and ship requested items to you at any U.S. address you specify...as long as you agree to ship them back when they are due.
