Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps us locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information to VDOT employees in ways that are more effective than if we were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all needed publications. Demand for ILL services has been lower than normal but we still have an excellent track record of getting materials patrons request. In the 5 years prior to the onset of the pandemic we averaged 7 loans per quarter to other libraries, while borrowing an average of 35 items per quarter from other libraries. At the 1-year mark in the pandemic, we find we have averaged 25 borrows a quarter and loaned only 2 items total (0.5 per quarter). Due to the pandemic, our OCLC lending symbol has remained turned off until library staff can access collections and process materials safely. Our Interlibrary Loans (ILL) borrowing activity was the highest we have seen since 2018. We requested 37 items from 23 libraries in 9 states.
This quarter the library requested and received 37 total items from other libraries. 23 libraries loaned items to us, of which 34 were supplied by academic libraries and 3 by federal libraries. Items requested were from libraries in 9 different states. 18 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 19 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
Once again this quarter our OCLC lending symbol was deactivated. Because we were temporarily listed as a "non-lender" we did not receive any requests. This is the third quarter (since 2006) that we have not filled any requests.
