Interlibrary loans, led by Barb Neyman, is used to deliver specialized information to VDOT employees by relying on relationships with other libraries. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to place and receive loans from libraries worldwide. VDOT benefits geattly from this service and it remained in demand this quarter. In the past 5 years we have averaged 7 loans and 35 borrows per quarter, but this year requests from other libraries have increased: 73 in Q1 (we filled 5), 86 in Q2 (we filled 8) and 109 in Q3 (we filled 9). Due to the pandemic's effect on ILL programs worldwide, we received a record low two ILL requests this quarter (down from record highs last quarter). We filled zero, our OCLC lending symbol is still turned off and our collections quarantined. We resumed borrowing, receiving 10 items from other libraries, 9 of which were digital.
This quarter the library requested and received 10 items from other libraries. 10 libraries worldwide supplied items to us, thought only 1 item came from a transportation library. 8 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 1 from a federal library and 1 from a government library. Items requested were from libraries in 6 states. 1 was filled as hard copy and 9 were filled as photocopy/digital/fax.
This quarter we received 2 requests from 2 libraries in 2 states, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic we were not able to fill the requests. This is the first quarter since we established our ILL service that we did not fill a single ILL request.
