Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, allows us to quickly locate, acquire, and deliver esoteric resources to VDOT employees. It would not make sense for a small library like ours to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store every resource ever requested, so this "on-demand" service requires us to network with other libraries. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to place and receive loan requests from thousands of libraries worldwide. Once again we are a net borrower this quarter. While we consider ourselves a specialized "transportation" library, we borrow from and lend more to academic libraries.
This quarter we requested and received 13 items total. Of those 11 were supplied by academic libraries and 2 by state libraries, none of which were transportation libraries. Items requested were from libraries in 8 states and no foreign countries. Of all requests, 6 were filled as hard copy (books/reports) while 7 were filled as photocopies or scans (articles/chapters).
This quarter we received 27 requests from 23 libraries in 16 states. We supplied 8 items total, 4 scanned items and 4 hard copy items. Of items loaned, 1 went to a "transportation" library and 7 to academic libraries.
