Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending and document delivery, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library quickly locate and deliver information to VDOT employees in a way that is more effective than if the library were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all requested publications. The library continues to be a net borrower. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to efficiently place and receive loan requests from thousands of libraries worldwide, free of charge. It is interesting to note this quarter the increasing trend for library staff to find and deliver articles and other resources via document delivery (a related service), which reminds us that even publicly accessible resources can be hard to locate. Patrons appreciate the fact that they can ask us to find and deliver resources.
This quarter the library requested and received 23 total items from other libraries. 15 libraries lent items to us. 19 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 2 by federal libraries, 2 by state libraries and none from a public or private library. Only one item came from a "transportation" library. Items requested were borrowed from libraries in 11 states. 18 of the the item requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 5 as photocopy/digital/fax (articles/chapters).
This quarter we received 42 requests from 27 libraries in 16 states. We were able to supply 7 items total: 1 hard copy and 6 scanned items. Two of the items were delivered to "transportation" libraries, 3 to federal librariees and 2 to academic libraries.
