Library Quarterly Report FY17 Q1: July - September 2016

A

n analysis of transactional data collected over the last 9 years indicates (across all collections and services) that while July-September is a brisk time for patron use of full-text databases, it is more moderate for patron/library staff interactions. This makes it an ideal time for training and hiring.

This quarter the library welcomed Amber Anglada to its staff. Amber is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Library Science at Drexel University. Learn more...

This quarter we focused considerable time advancing the rollout of new software systems: LibAnswers with LibChat, and Reference Analytics from vendor Springshare. Initial staff training has relied heavily on documentation (including live staff training sessions and Webinars, and documentation from Springshare), as well as dozens of specific questions directed at Springshare's customer support team.

Systems configuration was done by Ken Winter (Administrator for Springshare applications) and is being continually refined as library staff learn to use the applications. Our understanding of the technical capabilities of Springshare systems has improved with practice. Procedures will be further refined with internal staff training and collaboration in the next two quarters as we establish "best practices" for implementing Springshare products at VDOT. In the meantime, library staffers are practicing with Springshare, pursuing self-guided training, and discussing lessons learned in weekly staff meetings.

Barb Neyman continues to run a robust Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery services, with a noticeable spike in delivery of documents from ScienceDirect, the library's newest resource. Additionally, Barb coordinates the library's lending program and continues to develop and expand the P.E. Exam Study Collection for use by VDOT employees preparing for that credential.

Finally, Gil Kenner initiated a scanning and indexing pilot project with student assistant James O'Leary to determine the suitability of OCLC's CONTENTdm software as a content management system that would create a publicly accessible Web portal to search the VDOT Bulletin 1938-2006. There has been considerable VDOT staff interest in access to back issues of the VDOT Bulletin.
